Botox / Dysport for Wrinkles

Treatment information

Generally about the treatment

Botox and Dysport are mainly used in the forehead, but can also minimise the dynamic wrinkles surrounding the eyes, and on the upper lip, as well as minimise drooping at the corners of the mouth.

Dysport and Botox have no effect on fine wrinkles or acne scars. For this purpose it's necessary with dermabrasion, peeling, or laser treatment.

Botox and Dysport have an effect on what is called dynamic (mimic) wrinkles. In other words, wrinkles that occur when the muscles of the face contract.

The result of a wrinkle treatment with Botox or Dysport will be visible after 5-7 days, but will have a maximum effect after approx. 2 weeks.

Botulinum Toxin type A is the active agent in Botox, Dysport, and Vistabel. It is actually the same as sausage poison. For many years, this active agent has been used for treatment of muscle cramps and spasms.

Botox, Dysport, and Vistabel prevent the release of signals between the nerve and muscle. This completely relaxes the muscle.

The procedure

The skin is disinfected in order to avoid infection. With the use of a super thin syringe the Botox, Dysport, or Vistabel is injected into the exact muscle to be relaxed.

There may be a temporary pain when injecting the Dysport, Botox, or Vistabel.

A treatment will take less than 30 minutes.

Anaesthesia

The treatment is done ambulant and usually without sedation.

Side-effects

After the treatment, there will be some reddening and swelling in the treated area. A temporary discolouration, along with contusions (bruising), as well as numbness and headache might occur.

Risk of complications

When used in the eye surroundings, there is risk of temporary sagging and swollen eyelids, inverted lower eyelids, which rub the eyelashes against the eye, as well as dry eyes and double vision. This only occurs very rarely.

Furthermore, there is a risk of the body becoming immune to the Botulinum Toxin, which means that further treatment will have to be cancelled, seeing as neither Botox, Dysport, nor Vistabel will have effect anymore.

The long term risks of using Botulinum Toxin are unknown.

Healing and recovery

Work may be resumed immediately after the treatment. You should avoid touching the treated area during the first hours after the treatment. It is also advised not to lie down until a few hours after the treatment.

Duration of the result

A wrinkle treatment with Botox or Dysport has a lasting effect of approx. 4-8 months, after which a new treatment is required.
